What is TMD/TMJ?
Do any of these sound familiar to you?
- Frequent headaches
- Pain or soreness in the jaw
- Pain in the face, neck, or shoulders
- Clenching teeth
- Popping or clicking sound in the jaw when you chew
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Stuffy or congested ears
If one or more of the previous symptoms were familiar with your day-to-day life, it would be advisable for you to seek examination for TMJ/TMD.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (referred to as both TMJ and TMD), is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull, allowing the jaw to open and close. Over 10 million Americans suffer from TMJ/TMD, making it a common concern among dentists and their patients.
TMJ/TMD tends to worsen over time. Unfortunately, many people either feel that they must live with the discomfort, or they do not realize that certain symptoms (e.g. headaches or ringing in the ears) has any relation to the temporomandibular joint. This is why it is important for all dental patients to inform their dentist of any unusual symptoms that they are experiencing. TMJ/TMD is commonly caused by the misalignment of the teeth and jaw. A treatment plan that aims to stabilize the teeth and jaw alignment is often prescribed. A temporary bite guard often provides successful relief from TMJ/TMD. For those with a more serious case of a misaligned bite, long-term treatment options and procedures can be advised to suit patients’ individual needs. Treatments that have proven successful in relieving patient discomfort include reshaping teeth enamel, placing porcelain crowns, and installing a permanent bite guard. All patients are evaluated on a personalized basis, and treatment will depend on your specific needs and the severity of the condition.
