Closing Your Front Tooth Gap: Bonding or Veneers?
Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Unfortunately, few of us were born with perfect teeth. While there are several types of imperfections that can exist, a large gap between the front teeth is among the most common and concerning. If you are hiding your smile due to an unsightly space between your two front teeth, your cosmetic correction may not be as costly or time-consuming as you may think. In fact, there are two cosmetic dentistry solutions that can correct tooth gaps in just a few short visits – cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers.
Cosmetic Bonding
Bonding is going to be your most affordable and quickest option in terms of fixing your tooth gap. In fact, it’s a painless procedure that only takes one brief visit. Cosmetic bonding relies on composite resin, the same strong material used in tooth-colored fillings. Composite resin is applied to the side of the tooth to build up the tooth and close the gap. The resin is hardened with a special low-heat curing light and polished towards smooth perfection. The result is a natural-looking and more confident smile – and no more embarrassing gap!
Cosmetic Veneers
There are times in which the gap between your front teeth is just too large to solve with composite resin. In such cases, porcelain veneers are a better choice. Porcelain veneers involve bonding a thin shell of porcelain to the front surfaces of your teeth. They can be customized in color, size and shape – so your dentist will fabricate them in a way that closes the gap in the most natural and seamless way possible. Veneers do require that a tiny portion of your teeth be shaved off so that the veneer can bond more strongly. This makes the procedure irreversible, but most patients never want to go back to their gapped smile anyways. Though more invasive than cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers involve minimal time (2-3 visits) and no discomfort. You can even use veneers to cover up stains, chips and cracks. As an added bonus, veneers are also stain resistant, so you can retain a white smile despite your love of coffee or red wine.
